Obituary

STOKER, IRIS "JOY" age 95, of Norris, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on November 30 th , 2022. She will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Born May 16, 1927, in Marianna, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Wade and Velma Smith and third eldest of six siblings. On November 25, 1946, she married the late Richard "Dick" Hopper who passed away after 40 years of marriage. Joy then married Robert "Bob" Stoker in November 30, 1991, who passed away in August 2012.


During WWII, Joy's family temporarily relocated to Oak Ridge for three years where she was in the second graduating class at Oak Ridge High School in 1945. She returned to Marianna, and after her first marriage moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan where she and her family resided for 38 years. She worked as a supervisor for Michigan Bell for 12 years. She then worked in a key accounting position at Ervin Industries for another 24 years
before taking early retirement and relocating to Norris, Tennessee.


Many of Joy's passions included cooking and baking as well as staying busy doing crochet, quilting and many types of crafts. She was also a lover of books and reading. She served as a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years at Calvary Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan as well as for 25 years at the First Baptist Church in Andersonville where she also served as personnel director for five years.

Joy was very active in the local community and was a longtime member of the Norris AARP chapter serving as President, Vice President, and Program Chairman. She was a member of the Norris Women's Club, both the Anderson and Fairview Home Demonstration Clubs, worked as an Election Officer, and volunteered as a docent at the Lenoir Museum. Joy was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed weekly games with
friends.

Joy was preceded in death by brothers Wade Smith, Jr., James Smith and Robert Smith, as well as sisters Fern Bunch, Mardis Jones and Linda Thompson.  Joy is survived by her son Richard Hopper, Jr. and partner David Grega of Calistoga, CA; daughter and son-in-law Doris and Robert Jordan of  Pinckney, MI and granddaughters, Casey Jordan and wife Shana Makos, Kelly Jordan, and Mary Buzzard and husband Julius, and great-granddaughter Josephine. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much and affectionately called her Aunt Dodie.


Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be scheduled in the future.
The family requests all donations be made directly to the First Baptist Church of Andersonville or to the Norris Community Library in Norris, TN.
