Jay Thomas Meredith, 89, of Powell, TN was a loving husband and father, committed family man, community servant and loved by everyone he met, passed on December 10, 2020 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, TN.
Jay was born March 2,1931 in rural Claiborne County, TN. He was a graduate of Jellico High School in 1951. After which he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War in Labrador Canada. It was during this time, he met his future wife Norma Brower and they married after his military service. Jay attended college and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a degree in Accounting. Soon thereafter, he and Norma moved to Tennessee where they have lived in Knoxville for the past 60 years.
Jay worked in the business office at the University of Tennessee as the Director of Pre-audit for 30+ years and retired in 1994. He served his community by coaching football, baseball, softball, and basketball at Badgett field and the Cumberland Estates Recreation Center. He served as basketball commissioner and park president for several years. During retirement, Jay loved helping family, working in the yard, and playing golf. Jay was active at his church, Wallace Memorial Baptist Church, where he and Norma have faithfully attended for the past 60 years.
Jay leaves behind his loving wife Norma to whom he was married for 63 years, brother Jennings (Phyllis) Meredith, in-laws Joyce (Carl) Maggard, Janet Brower, his children Tim (Debbie) Meredith of Jefferson City, Todd (Karen) Meredith of Huntsville, AL, and Allyson Meredith ( Scott) Tracy of Powell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Whitney (Ryan) Hardwick, Kaitlyn (Brett) Stewart, Morgan (Daniel) Tabor, Kyle Tracy, Zachary (Mikaila) Meredith, and Weston Meredith. Jay also leaves 4 great grandchildren as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
There will be an outdoor graveside service held on Monday, December 14 th at 1:00pm at the Woodhaven Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 160 Edgemoor Road, Powell, TN 37849. The service is open to anyone who would like to attend and there will also be a livestream of the service on Jay's facebook page. You may go to Woodhaven.com to for online condolences.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make a donation to Wallace Memorial Baptist Church in his name, 701 Merchants Road, Knoxville, TN.
