Obituary

John Thomas “Tom” Denson, age 84, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on October 4, 2026. He was born on January 19, 1942.

Tom was a proud United States Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War. He worked for NASA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and had a gift for fixing just about anything. His family and friends knew they could count on his capable hands and caring heart.

Above all, Tom loved his people. He had a way of making everyone feel special in his presence, and the time spent with him became memories his loved ones will always treasure. He loved the lake, boating, and sharing fun times with family and friends.

He is survived by his special love, Sue Barnes; brother, Richard; daughters, Christy Burton and Teresa Denson; son, Keith Barnes; grandchildren, Tiffany, Seth, Max, Trent, Whitney (Daniel), Will (Danielle), Jacob, and Taryn; and great-grandchildren, Claire, Evan, Wade, Cooper, and Elle.

Tom will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his kindness, his warmth, and the love he gave so freely. His gentle, caring heart left a lasting impression on those who knew him, and his family will carry that love with them always.

A service honoring Tom’s life will be held on October 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in Tom’s memory.
