Obituary

Moorhead, Sylvia C, age 88 passed away Friday, August 15, 2008 at NHC Oak Ridge, where she had been since suffering a stroke in December of 2005. Beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Sylvia was born September 11, 1919 in Orgas, W. Virginia to Clara and Howard Cooper. Preceded in death by husband, Walter L. Moorhead Jr., and son-in-law Sandy Clark. Also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers. Sylvia was a longtime member of Edgemoor Baptist Church. She loved her church family. She loved Quilting, the "Thirty Niners", Camp Smokey, playing scrabble, doing crossword puzzles and mowing her yard. She was a "working woman" and didn't like wasted time. Sylvia and Walter Moorhead came to Oak Ridge in 1943, living first in a small trailer, then a "flat top" before moving to the Claxton community in 1948. Sylvia put herself through nurses' training, graduating in 1969 at the age of 50. She made the highest score in Tennessee on the state boards that year. She worked at Oak Ridge Hospital until she was 72 years old. Mrs. Moorhead is survived by children, Clara Clark of Knoxville, Mary & John Hindman of Harrison TN, Dr. Walter Moorhead and wife Dr. Carol Ross of Wrangell Alaska. She is also survived by one brother, Hillard Cooper of Orgas, W. Virginia. Four grandchildren, Butch Hughes and wife Pam of Cohutta Ga.; Sandy Clark and wife Crissy of Springfield Mo.; Mary Hooks and husband Brad of Knoxville; Sarah Wilson and husband Aaron of Cleveland Tn. She leaves behind three great grandchildren, Magan Hughes, Emma Clark and Rylan Hooks. A great, great granddaughter is expected in November. She also leaves behind special friend Margaret McQueen of Oak Ridge. She also leaves behind roommate, friend and now family Janie Reynolds of NHC Oak Ridge. The family will receive friends from 6pm til 8pm on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Woodhaven Funeral Home in Claxton. Funeral Services will be at 2pm on Thursday, August 21 at Edgemoor Baptist Church with interment to follow in the Woodhaven Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tom Byrge, officiating.
